What’s inside

Here are some FUN FACTS about Kaua’i

The meaning of Kaua’i: In the Hawaiian language, “ka” means ‘the’ ; “ua” means ‘rain’ ; “i” means ‘place’. So it translates to ‘The Rainy Place’.

Kaua’i has a ‘Palm Tree Building Code’. It is actually illegal to build anything that is taller than a palm tree. So, all the buildings, resorts, and hotels are less than four stories (with the exception of the ones built into the hillside). This helps keep Kaua’i quaint instead of becoming a huge city.

Kaua’i has more beaches compared to other Islands in the Hawaiian Island Chain. About half of Kaua’i’s coastline (or roughly 111 miles) is made up of beaches. There are about 28 beaches throughout Kaua’i.

Kaua’i holds the largest coffee plantation in America. Kaua’i Coffee is located on the island’s south side. This plantation does everything, growing, harvesting, roasting, and packaging all of its coffee.

Kaua’i has had some big Hollywood stars here, shooting countless movies over the years. Some of the films include: Outbreak, Jurassic Park, Baywatch, Gilligan’s Island, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, and others. There are also tours available to see the most popular locations.

Kaua’i has no daylight savings. Hawaii in general does not participate in daylight savings, since they are located so close to the equator, there is no need.

More FUN FACTS..

Kaua’i is the oldest island in the main Hawaiian Island Chain, forming over 3-5 million years ago. Therefore, there is more ‘runoff’ from the rivers. When swimming in the ocean, you should always swim up current from the runoff.

Kaua’i’s color is Purple, like the light purple flowers you will find on the Mokihana Tree. The anise-scented berries were also used by pre-contact Hawaiians as perfumes and room fresheners. Found only on Kaua’i, the purple flowers and berries are predominantly used in island leis.

Kaua’i is referred to as the Garden Island because it is filled with exotic and beautiful plants and flowers, everywhere you look.

Only some of the island can be accessed. Most of the island cannot be accessed by car. You would have to use an ATV or go by foot, hiking trails, to see more, but even then, some are still out of reach.

Kaua’i reef is dying. Due to the huge impact of visitors using chemical sunscreens, plus the substantial runoff of crops, pastureland, etc.. our once beautiful vibrant coral reefs are now losing color and life, and turning into algae reefs.

A few things you can do to help: Don’t walk on the reef, don’t disturb the sea life, don’t use chemical sunscreens, and don’t support gmo on Kaua’i.

Kaua’i has more oceanfront golf courses than any other Hawaiian Island. There are challenging courses with unique terrains and some of the most flawless backdrops. Volcanic cliffs, gorgeous ravines, dazzling ocean views, and tropical greenery, will have you relaxed and ready to play your best game.

house rules

Before you begin your exciting adventure at our lovely rental property, we kindly invite you to familiarize yourselves with our house rules section. These simple guidelines will ensure a harmonious and delightful stay for everyone. Let’s make this vacation one to remember!

PARKING

• Only one vehicle per rental is permitted on the property.

• Please park in your designated spot ONLY, which will be assigned to you by email.

• Please have respect for other guests around and no loud music, but also, please use quiet voices while in the parking area and while entering/exiting the building.

CHECKING IN

• Check-in time is at 4pm

• Front door will be unlocked upon arrival, please be sure this door remains LOCKED

•Find the correct door number and studio name (#1 Orchid Suite, #2 Taro Suite), again the code will have been given to you in email communication.

• Key is located in lock box

ROOM RULES

• Please care for the linens and towels (charges may apply for stained or torn items). Kauai has a type of ‘red dirt’ that can ruin anything white. We have provided you with biodegradable exfoliating sponges to use while bathing to help get all that stuck-on dirt removed 🙂

• Please be patient with the hot water. We use solar heating for the home and sometimes it can take a couple minutes for the hot water to reach you. Try to turn the shower on a little early to get it going before you jump in.

• Please be sure to turn the lights, fans, and A/C OFF when you leave the property.

• Again, this is a very quiet quaint property, and we ask that you not only respect the quiet hours in the noise ordinance of the neighborhood (from 930pm – 8am), but also respecting your neighbor guest. This property only has 2 rentals on site, so still extremely private.

• Please rinse off all sand before entering. Be sure to also rinse off beach equipment and let it dry out fully before closing it up.

LAUNDRY

(Laundry room is located outside of your sliding door, on the back path.

The door will be unlocked and labeled ‘LAUNDRY ROOM’)

• Please don’t leave any laundry in the washer/dryer longer than 15 minutes after the cycle is complete. Items should be washed, then dried and removed so the next person can have access.

• Always leave your laundry basket next to the washer/dryer. In the case your items are not removed right away, the next guest can place your items in the laundry basket and on the side for you.

•We have a ‘water lint catcher’ on the floor. This always needs to have at least 2 inches of water in it while the dryer is being run, to appropriately catch the lint.

POOL

(This is a salt water, heated pool)

• Pool cleaning is every Thursday.

• You will need to remove the pool cover by utilizing the code box on the wall parallel to the pool. Code: 1234 then ‘check mark’, then open or close.

• Please be sure the filter is unplugged and move the plug with cover, place it on the side of the pool.. Then put the plug back at the top of the pool once the cover is replaced.

• To help keep the pool clean, please always replace the cover after you are done.

• When opening the pool cover, please open ONLY TO FILTER. DO NOT SWIM UNDER POOL COVER.

• NO GLASS BY POOL.

• No Running around the pool.

• For other Poipu Kai facilities, such as pools and tennis courts, you should abide by the Poipu Kai Association Rules and Regulations found on their website: www.poipukai.org

YARD & TRASH SERVICE

• Yard maintenance is on Tuesday

• Trash service is Tuesday + Friday morning

CHECK OUT
• Check-out time is at 10 am

• Upon checkout, please be sure trash is taken to the designated trash bin outside in the parking area.

• Please be sure A/C, lights, and fans are turned OFF, and doors are locked behind you.

• Be sure all windows are closed and doors are locked

• Please feel free to leave any unopened foods or things that you may not be able to take on the plane, the cleaners will be grateful.

•Take a look at, and leave a review, in our guest book!

SIGHTSEEING

Here on the Island, you never know what the weather is going to do. It’s hard to pre-schedule all of your activities because some could be canceled due to rain. It may be hard to get in at the last minute also.

Things that may be able to wait until you arrive to schedule:

Boat tour

Ziplining

Mountain tubing

ATV adventure

Horseback riding

Kayaking & hiking tours

Once you are on Island, you will have a better grip on the weather and can decide, “Today is nice, it’s a beach day!” Or, “Today is a little rainy, maybe it’s a sightseeing day.” .. and sights are there to SEE!

From hiking in Koke’e State Park and driving through the Waimea Canyon on the west side, to exploring ancient caves and rinsing off in the natural waterfalls on the lush north shore.  Kaua’i is one of the best islands to relax, and go with the flow.
